Doing the Will of God from the HEART

Google image
I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. Psalm 40:8

We’re well into January 2014, and I’m still in the anticipation mode.  How about you?  I’m looking forward with excitement to the New Year.  But I’m asking myself how best to approach this brand new year.

I’ve learned from experience that New Year’s Resolutions don’t work so well for me.  Neither does a “word for the year”.  No matter how inspired I feel at the time, it seems by Valentine’s Day I’ve already forgotten them.  The spirit is willing…

Nevertheless, reading my bible this morning I came across a phrase that really captured my attention—doing the will of God from the heart.  I asked God to help me make that my prayer of intention.  I wrote it on an index card so I could read it often. Somehow that seems to work for me.

Not with eye service, as men-pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men. Ephesians 6:6-7

And I read somewhere the other day the astute observation that if we prayed more we would have more reasons to rejoice.

As it usually does, this Scripture set me on a search for more Scriptures and some reflection and meditation on how to go about “doing the will of God from the heart.”

So here are the inspired words of the apostle Paul that I’ll leave you with today.

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.  1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

Meet CYNTHIA L SIMMONS ~ Plus, Announcing FREE Kindle ebook promotion of God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea

Cynthia L. Simmons

But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ's triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. 2 Corinthians 2:14 NLT

Today I’d like to introduce to you my special guest, Cynthia Simmons.  Cynthia and her husband, Ray, have five children and reside in Atlanta. She taught for over twenty-five years as a homeschool mother and Bible teacher. Her writing has appeared in CAG publications, NATHHAN NEWS, Chattanooga Regional Historical Magazine, Georgia Right to Life Newsletter, Chattanooga Times Free Press, Catholic Exchange, ECLA magazine, and Christian Devotions.us.  Active in Christian Authors Guild (CAG), she conducts writing workshops and has served as president, vice president, and conference director.

I met "Cyndi" through the Christian Authors Guild (CAG).  Their annual fall conference, Catch the Wave , was the very first writers’ conference I attended.  I’ve been blessed to attend that conference twice.  That’s where I got to know this soft-spoken lady who is a real powerhouse of information and encouragement for writers and Christian women.

Cyndi has a heart for encouraging women in today’s crazy, upside-down world. She loves history and peppers her speaking and teaching with fascinating vignettes from the past. Her first book, Struggles and Triumphs, was nominated for 2008 Georgia Author of the year.  She hosts Heart of the Matter Radio for women seeking the elegance of God’s wisdom.
I encourage you to visit Cyndi’s website: www.clsimmons.com.  I have personally found CAG Spotlight to be very beneficial.  I have learned so much from the resources provided.

Cyndi, could you tell us a little about CAG Spotlight as well as “Heart of the Matter Radio”?

While I promoted my first book, I did a lot of radio interviews. It required some work, but I loved it. My publicist and I put together a list of questions, and I prepared answers. I practiced my sound bites so I’d be smooth. When other possible topics came to mind, I prepared a short answer to them also.

At the time I served as president of my writing group, Christian Authors Guild (CAG). I realized I could use what I learned to promote our events, like our annual fall conference.

The goal of CAG Spotlight is to interview authors and VIPs in the writing industry to help new authors get published. By then I held membership in American Christian Fiction Writers, so I sent out a query for authors to interview. Tiffany Colter volunteered and my first podcast went live in December 2010.

In the spring of 2013, a friend asked me to live stream a writing contest. I knew that meant I would have to do radio. So, after praying for a month or so, I made the transition from podcasting to radio, and Heart of the Matter Radio was born.

Heart of the Matter Radio reaches out to women who long for the elegance of God’s wisdom. We broadcast every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern on my website. I continue to do CAG Spotlight for writers monthly on the second segment of the program.

Why you don't even know what will happen tomorrow!

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  James 4:14 NIV

Happy New Year!

I gave myself a two week holiday.  I know it’s not quite up yet, but I couldn’t wait until Monday to wish you a wonderful new year.
One year ago, I couldn’t have imagined all that 2013 would bring.  It was filled with many surprises, many wonderful events, much happiness as well as some disappointments and sadness. I know many of you have expressed the same thoughts about the year you just left behind.
In reality, we don’t know what tomorrow holds.
This unusually cold weather has me checking the almanac and online sources for the extended forecasts.
What’s the weather going to be like?
But again, the truth is, we really don’t know what tomorrow will be like.
It’s all in His hands.
We can refer to sources for the time of sunrises and sunsets, patterns of the moon and tide, seasons and weather for weeks in advance, but we really don’t know what tomorrow holds.  Even with that in mind, I’m already mapping out my big plans for 2014.
I know…It’s all in accordance to His will.
I’m a firm believer in embracing the moment.  And I look forward to a happy tomorrow. But I think the best approach would be to live today like tomorrow may never come.
The good news is, God’s promises for us are timeless.
Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, to day, and forever. Hebrews 13:8
So, grab hold of His hand, and go with God each step of the way this new year.
I want to ask Him each day what He expects of me and do my best to put my LORD first.
Blessings to each and every one of you in 2014.  It was my pleasure to spend some of 2013 with you and hope we'll meet here often.
Please come back on Monday when I’ll introduce to you a lovely Christian lady, and author, and tell you about a great FREE promotion coming up with the kindle version of God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea.

Come Quickly Lord Jesus

On the way to Bethelem ~ Google image

Dear Friends and kind supporters of Write Moments with God,

I pray you have a very merry Christmas filled with His peace, joy, and love.  I wish you a blessed new year.  I'm thankful for you.  I can't express how much you mean to me.

I pray that I have ministered some of His peace and love to you this year through my words and prayers, and that together we have lifted up the name of Christ and drawn closer in our relationships with Him. At this time, I'm thinking a little break would be suitable.  I'll be back on the 5th or 6th of January 2014.

Today I'm giving you one of my favorite messages.  I wrote it last Christmas so some of you have read it already, but it will be new to many of you.  I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve heard it said that we are in God’s waiting room.  At first thought somber images come to mind, but those are quickly displaced by the sweetest memories of waiting in the delivery room.  We’ve all awaited the birth of a baby.  An expectant mother learns best what it means to wait.  She anticipates in trepidation the long awaited event.  Although she may fear the unknown and the pain to be endured, she expects to joyfully welcome the baby into her arms and her heart and her life.  I remember well preparing with tender care for the arrivals of my own six children. I would clean the house, and pack my overnight bag, having prepared a place for the baby, and gently folding and touching every piece of the tiny layette.

Mary waited for the arrival of  her child--the long anticipated, foretold through the ages, arrival of our flesh and blood Savior.  Like every young mother, she watched for signs that the day was approaching.  Every little flutter deep within, as close as her heartbeat, caused her to be still and know that the day was coming.

Advent marks a season when Christians everywhere relive those events which led up to the birth of the Messiah.  Advent is a season of waiting in which we prepare our hearts to receive our Lord.  Every year we celebrate with renewed joy because we know it is eternally relevant to us who live by faith.

Yes, you might say, we are in God’s waiting room.

With his humble birth, the Word of God was made flesh, and God lived amongst us.
After Jesus’ resurrection and ascension into Heaven, the apostles and believers awaited the promise of the Father, and the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost.

Today we await the final manifestation of His glory for which we pray every day . . . thy kingdom come . . .  the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And it will surely come, just as surely as the child was born, and the Holy Spirit descended from Heaven.

May our hearts be filled with joy this season.  We serve a faithful and living God who always delivers what He promises. He will not disappoint us.  Today let us pray as Mary must have prayed, Oh come quickly Lord Jesus.

Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he comes shall find watching.  Luke 12:37a (KJV)

God bless you!
