Meet Guest Author, Jane Herlong Jenkins ~ Plus monthly Book Give-Away

Jane Herlong Jenkins  www.janeherlong.com

Jane Jenkins Herlong is my special guest today on Write Moments with God.  Jane and I met through our association with Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. She has graciously offered to give away a copy of her newest book, Bury Me with My Pearls, so be sure to leave your comments at the end of the interview.

Humorist, Amazon “best-selling” author and professional singer, Jane Jenkins Herlong finds the funny in dysfunction while entertaining with her comedy and singing (which can be heard on Sirius XM and Pandora).  From the tomato fields of Johns Island, South Carolina to a Miss America runway, Jane’s funny and original Southern stories and her award-winning singing help audiences learn life-skills and the healing power of laughter.

Jane has been married for thirty-three years to Thomas Herlong, and they have a son and a daughter, one at Clemson University and the other at The College of Charleston.

Jane, tell us a little about yourself and your writing.

Bury Me with My Pearls is my third book.  My first book is entitled, Bare Feet to High Heels: You Don’t Have to be a Beauty Queen to be a Beautiful Person.  The book is humorous and highlights my journey to the Miss America Pageant. My second book is entitled, What Ta-Tas Teach Us. This book is in memory of my sister who had breast cancer. I have been published in Guideposts and Successful Farming, and wrote a newspaper humor column for years.

What’s the best thing about writing?

I enjoy sharing my humorous stories and my faith with others.

What inspired you on your writing journey?

The highest calling in life is service. There is one chapter in my book that addresses the darkest time in my life. I had to turn my pain into someone else’s gain.

Which books have had the most impact on you as a writer?

I read self-help, Christian books; Joyce Meyer, Dr. Henry Cloud, and Jan Silvious are some of my favorites.

Is there one piece of writing advice you wish you’d had from the beginning?

Pay attention to your grammar teacher.

What do you think the Lord is teaching you through your writing?

I am developing the Fruit of the Spirit, forgiveness.

Jane, tell us about your newest book, Bury Me with my Pearls.

My grandmother requested to be buried with her pearls. So many women love wearing them; it's also very Southern. The process of developing our jewels requires faith and surviving tough times.

Bury Me with My Pearls uses humor and Biblical principles to address the importance of guarding our spiritual gifts and doing the right thing, regardless of our feelings or circumstances. It reminds us to trust God in all circumstances, and then wait for his results.

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary ; and they shall walk , and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Are You Heading out the Door in your Own Strength? Meet with the LORD First Thing

Morning dew on the rose ~ Google images in today's post

For you shall not go out with haste. Isaiah 52:12a (AKJV)

Do you sometimes catch yourself grabbing a piece of toast, or a muffin, and your coffee on the way out the door in the morning in too big of a hurry for your quiet time with the Lord?

I’ve done that a few times lately, and then realized, I didn’t take those first few minutes of my day to seek His face and all the blessings that go with that.  (Even ten or fifteen minutes can be a refreshing devotional time.)

Jesus is not like a piece of toast you can grab on your way out the door. Yes, I know He is always with us, but we need to seek His mind regarding the day first thing in the morning.

No matter how long I have practiced it—because I have learned what works best for me—I still by-pass that quiet time sometimes.  Inevitably I regret it.  So, here’s some reminders for myself. I hope they’ll help you as well.

><> First thing in the morning, go to the Lord.

Meditate in the quiet stillness of the day. Pray.

Seek His counsel and guidance through prayer and Scripture reading.

When we run out the door and pray on the fly, we begin the day in our own strength.

When we hit the ground running then ask God to bless us, we’re started with things upside down.

><> First thing in the morning, meet with God.

Seek His counsel and guidance through prayer and Scripture reading.

Receive His mercy and His grace and His blessings.

When I find I’m experiencing too many frustrations, feel unprepared or lack spiritual purpose, I usually then realize I was too hasty to grab the coffee and the muffin and run.  I failed to give God a chance to work in my soul and prepare me to face the day.

><> First thing in the morning, meet with Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit.

Receive their blessings and a kiss of grace to “Go in Peace” and “Redeem the time for His glory.”

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

My voice shall you hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer to you. Psalm 5: 1, 3 (AKJV)
Thank you so much for visiting Write Moments with God. I hope you'll come again. If you'd like to leave a comment, please feel free to do that.
